The MFL MarMac softball team entered postseason play riding a two-game winning streak, but couldn’t sustain the momentum in a close 5-4 loss to Marquette Catholic in a July 8 Class 2A regional match-up.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings to grab a 4-1 lead, before the Defenders tied the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Marquette Catholic pushed the eventual winning run across the following inning.
On the bump for the Bulldogs was senior Emily Hendrickson-Troester, who allowed seven hits, three walks and five earned runs in seven innings. She struck out one batter.
Emme Wikner earned two of MFL MarMac’s six hits, drove in a run and scored once. Garnett Niedziejko also plated a runner on two hits, and Kaitlin Picha had an RBI-double and run scored. Hendrickson-Troester knocked in a teammate on a sacrifice fly, while Hannah Jacobson singled and scored.
The loss dropped MFL MarMac to 7-24 overall. The Bulldogs were 5-11 in the Upper Iowa Conference standings, seventh ahead of Central and Postville.
