The bats of the Central  softball team remained silent last week, as the Warriors dropped another three games, starting with a June 24 double-header versus South Winneshiek.

In game one, South Winn continued building on an early lead, as Central struggled to put offense together, losing 10-1.

Central collected four hits, one each from Reese Berns, Oakley Armstrong, Gracie Kennicker, and Crystal Goodrich, who was also responsible for the lone RBI.

Ashlyn Scherf pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and seven walks, while striking out six batters.

“We were able to last seven innings against a very good South Winn team. Ashlyn Scherf did her job on the mound, trying different pitches to catch batters off guard. We had some errors defensively that led to runs. Offensively, we had only four hits, and it was hard to get things going,” said coach Abby Cummer.

The second game, however, did not last seven innings, as the Warriors found themselves trailing 12-0 after the first inning and were unable to score any runs. South Winneshiek added seven more runs over the next two innings, handing Central a 19-0 loss.

The Warriors finished with three hits, one each from Armstrong, Ashlyn Scherf and Blair Scherf.

Ashlyn Scherf was on the mound again, going two and one-third innings, giving up six hits and eight walks. Blair Scherf surrendered two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

“Simply put, South Winn hit the ball very well and we couldn’t stop them from scoring. And, on the flip side, we couldn’t get hits or a rhythm going with our bats,” Cummer said.

The final game of the week was at Springville, in a game the Warriors lost 10-0.

Central collected four hits, one each from Ashlyn Scherf, Blair Scherf, Goodrich and Audrey Palas.

Handling pitching duties was Blair Scherf, who went six innings, giving up five hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

“There were a few errors defensively that led to extra bases and runs for them. Offensively, we were hitting and getting on base, but just couldn’t capitalize on those opportunities,” Cummer said.

The Warriors will finish up the regular season this week, with two double-headers, the first on July 1 versus Postville. The final regular season match-up will be at MFL MarMac on Wednesday, July 3.

Central will begin postseason play the following Monday, July 8, at Kee. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
