The MFL MarMac baseball team went 2-2 in games last week, including splitting a doubleheader with conference leading South Winneshiek.
The Bulldogs began action June 24 at Anamosa. Despite scoring three times in the top of the first, they surrendered five unanswered runs to the Blue Raiders over the next four innings. MFL MarMac pushed a run across in the top of the sixth, to trim the lead to 5-4, but Anamosa tacked on in the bottom of the frame, and ultimately won 6-4.
Brayden Gordon collected two of the Bulldogs’ eight hits, drove in a run and scored once. Jacob Schellhorn also earned a pair of singles, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run. Carver Blietz-Bentien singled, walked and scored once.
Three pitchers took the mound for MFL MarMac. Bryce Radloff went one and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits, a walk and one earned run, while Parker Kuehl gave up two hits, two walks and an earned run in two innings of work. Schellhorn’s stat line included one hit and four walks. Just one of the three runs scored against him was earned.
The Bulldogs got back in the win column June 26, blasting Waukon 16-9. The team racked up 11 hits, 10 walks and four hit by pitches, doing much of the damage in a seven-run first inning.
Ben Krambeer netted three hits—including two doubles—and walked once, drove in two runs and scored once himself. Gordon totaled three RBIs on two hits, walked, stole a base and scored three runs, while Blietz-Bentien reached base four times on two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. He also stole a base and scored three runs. Elias Hatt finished the game with a pair of RBIs on one hit, three stolen bases and a run scored.
Waukon picked up 10 hits of their own and benefitted from 10 walks by Bulldog pitching. Krambeer allowed six hits, four walks and three earned runs over four innings, and Jaxon Millage was responsible for a hit, seven walks and four runs in two innings. Kade Humble worked the remaining inning, holding the Indians to two hits, a hit batter and an unearned run.
MFL MarMac concluded last week in an Upper Iowa Conference title-deciding doubleheader at South Winneshiek. The Warriors drew first blood with an opening-inning run in game one, but the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the third. They couldn’t hold on, though, as South Winn evened the score in the bottom of the fifth, then plated the winning run in the sixth.
Schellhorn allowed 10 hits and a hit batter, but executed key pitches to largely keep the Warriors stranded on base. His South Winn counterpart, Carson Streeter, limited MFL MarMac to just five hits, while striking out eight batters.
Kuehl led the MFL MarMac offense with an RBI-triple and also scored a run. Hatt singled twice and scored a run, while Krambeer doubled.
The Bulldogs were busier on the base paths in game two, collecting 11 hits and reaching base four more times on walks and hit by pitches. A five-run second inning propelled them to a 7-3 victory.
Kuehl was 3-4 and reached on an error, knocked in a run and scored twice. Hatt had a three-RBI double, walked and scored a pair of runs, while Krambeer singled, doubled and drove in a run.
Kuehl also pitched six strong innings to earn the win. He gave up six hits, two walks and hit batter, along with fanning seven Warriors.
MFL MarMac remains a game back of South Winn in the Upper Iowa Conference standings after splitting the June 27 twinbill. The Bulldogs are currently 14-3 in the UIC and 22-7 overall. The Warriors are 15-2 in conference play heading into the final week of the regular season.
The Bulldogs played at Clayton Ridge-Central on July 1, then will end the regular season at Crestwood on July 3. They are a top seed in Class 2A Substate 3 and will face either North Fayette Valley or Denver in a July 9 quarterfinal game in Monona. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
