The MFL MarMac softball team stayed strong last week, preserving through two losses to secure three wins for the team.
The Bulldogs began their week with a varsity doubleheader against West Central, then played another doubleheader against Postville on Wednesday, before ending their week at Waukon. Their record is now 3-9 in the Upper Iowa Conference, and the Bulldogs are sitting at seventh place with just over a week until the regular season ends.
MFL MarMac split a doubleheader with West Central on June 24. The Bulldogs started off strong with a win in the first game, scoring 11 runs and holding the Blue Devils to five.
Senior Ayla Gerndt scored three runs off two hits, while three of her teammates were also able to secure two hits.
During the second game of the night, the Bulldogs unfortunately fell, allowing West Central 13 runs while only bringing three across home plate. Emme Wikner earned three hits and brought home one run, while Katelyn Gerndt secured two hits and two runs.
Emily Hendrickson-Troester appeared on the mound in both games and struck out three batters, setting the stage for Lauryn Sandstrom, who appeared in the second game of the night and secured two strikeouts.
MFL MarMac followed that with a doubleheader at Postville on June 26, and was able to sweep their competition. In the first game, the Bulldogs allowed only three runs by Postville and brought 16 home. Garnett Niedziejko, Katelyn Gerndt and Wikner all got on base three times, totaling five runs. Every batter in the Bulldogs order was able to secure hits to help increase the score.
In the second game, the Bulldogs held Postville to 10 runs while scoring 21 themselves. Hendrickson-Troester appeared on the mound and had four strikeouts. Every player in MFL MarMac’s batting order helped the team secure either hits or runs in the game. Wikner led the team with four hits and six RBIs.
June 27, the Bulldogs traveled to Waukon for a varsity match-up, which unfortunately did not end with the results the team hoped for, with the Bulldogs falling 5-0.
Overall, the Bulldogs gained momentum heading into the last week of their regular season. On the slate this week was a doubleheader versus North Fayette Valley on July 1, then another home twinbill against Central on July 3.
