The MFL MarMac baseball team went 5-1 last week, earning a trio of Upper Iowa Conference victories as well as two non-conference match-ups. The effort improved the Bulldogs to 16-5 overall and 9-2 in the UIC standings.
MFL MarMac kicked off the week with a doubleheader sweep of Clayton Ridge-Central on June 10, including a 6-3 win in game one. The WarEagles mounted only two hits against Bulldog pitchers Nick Krambeer and Kade Humble, with all three of their runs unearned.
Jacob Schellhorn doubled, walked and stole a base, and accounted for two MFL MarMac RBIs and a run scored. Bryce Radloff was 2-3 and scored a run, while Carver Blietz-Bentien, Brayden Gordon and Jaxon Millage each singled and drove in a run.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to seal an 8-0 victory over CR-C in game two. The offense collected another nine hits and took advantage of five walks, three hit batters and five stolen bases. Millage was 3-4—including two singles and a double—and tallied four RBIs. Leadoff hitter Parker Kuehl scored each time he was on base, after singling, tripling and drawing a walk. Ben Krambeer knocked in two runs on one hit.
Krambeer also pitched four strong innings, limiting the WarEagles to three hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Millage fanned another six hitters and allowed just two hits in his three innings.
The following night, MFL MarMac edged South Winneshiek 1-0 to hand the Warriors their first conference loss. A second inning RBI from Jaron Wille, which scored Millage, made the difference in the pitching duel.
South Winn’s Carson Streeter and Braiden Todd surrendered only three hits and four walks to the Bulldogs, but MFL MarMac starter Parker Kuehl was even more masterful. He gave up just four hits and a walk and racked up 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning shutout.
On June 12, the Bulldogs broke a 4-4 tie against Jesup with a two-run sixth inning, then held off a late rally to win 6-5. Jacob Schellhorn was 3-4 and scored twice, while Kuehl notched two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Ben Krambeer singled, was hit by a pitch and had an RBI.
On the mound, Schellhorn allowed six hits, a walk and four runs—three of them earned—in five innings. The J-Hawks scored one run against Radloff, who walked three batters and hit another in two innings of work.
MFL MarMac’s tie with South Winn atop the UIC standings was short-lived, after the team suffered a 6-1 loss at Turkey Valley on June 13. The Trojans tagged Bulldog pitchers Millage and Humble for four hits and nine walks, while swiping five bases, and scored in every inning but the fifth.
Wille earned two of MFL MarMac’s six hits, and Ben Krambeer drove in Kuehl on a third inning single.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the week with a 12-3 win at Maquoketa Valley on June 14, boosted by a seven-run second inning. The team cranked out 13 hits and reached base another 12 times on walks and hit by pitches. Players also stole seven bases, including two each by Kuehl and Schellhorn.
Schellhorn finished the game 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kuehl was 2-3 along with a walk and sac fly, drove in two runs and crossed the plate twice himself. Gordon also plated two runners and scored once after collecting two hits and a walk. Ben Krambeer hefted a solo homer, his first long ball this season.
Nick Krambeer earned the win, allowing two hits, four walks and four runs over five innings. He struck out nine Wildcats.
MFL MarMac has another jam-packed week ahead, starting with an important home doubleheader against another conference contender, Kee, on June 17. The team played at winless Postville on June 18, then will welcome North Fayette Valley to Monona on June 20. The week will conclude at home versus Lisbon on June 21.
