Central athletes Gavin Holst and Zoey Hyde made their “Blue Oval” debuts at the Iowa High School Track and Field Meet last week.
Holst raced in the 3200-meter run on May 16, at Drake Stadium, finishing 21st in a time of 10:43.52.
Hyde set personal records in all four races she competed in, smashing the glass ceiling for adaptive racing at Central.
Hyde took advantage of what coach Martha Bauder said was an “electric atmosphere.” Amid the “unmatched enthusiasm” of the crowd, she rolled to the best finishes of her first season.
In the 100-meter wheelchair race, Hyde put up a time of 29.43, four seconds faster than any previous 100.
She finished the 200 in 1:01.01, giving Hyde a personal record by five seconds. She also beat her previous personal record in the 400-meter by over 30 seconds, completing the race in 1:58.14.
Additionally, Hyde destroyed her previous personal best in the 800, crossing the finish line in 4:15.09, over a minute faster than she’d raced all season.
Hyde finished on the podium in each race, with one silver medal in the 100 and three bronze medals in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter races.
“Sometimes the hype can get to a person, but Zoey took advantage and had her best times of her season and career so far. She’s already set lofty goals for next season and we have no doubt will go after them with dedication and hard work,” Bauder said.
