The MFL MarMac boys golf team won its third straight Upper Iowa Conference golf title last week.
The Bulldogs edged South Winneshiek by a stroke, 335-336, to take the top spot in the 18-hole tournament at Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on May 6. Turkey Valley was a close third with a 338.
Senior Nick Krambeer led all individuals with an 80, just ahead of Trojans Nicholas Bernhard and Oliver Schmitt, who turned in 81s. Krambeer’s MFL MarMac teammate Quinn McGeough placed fifth with an 83, and Jarett Hanson shot an 85, which was good for 10th place. Ben Krambeer tied for 16th with an 87. A score of 91 tied Sawyer Keehner for 20th place, and Wesley Corlett rounded out the Bulldogs’ day with a 93. He finished 24th.
MFL MarMac followed that up with a second-place performance at the Class 2A sectional at Monticello on May 8, advancing them to districts this week.
The Bulldogs combined for a 317, just behind Oelwein’s score of 316, and were aided by a pair of top-five finishes from McGeough and Nick Krambeer. McGeough totaled a 75, trailing only the 72 put up by Oelwein’s Brandon Tournier and the 74 from Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Aidan Koester. Nick Krambeer shot a 78 to place fifth.
Ben Krambeer slotted into a tie for 10th place with an 81, and Keehner tied for 14th with an 83. Hanson shot an 87, tying him for 20th, then Corlett claimed 32nd with a score of 97.
MFL MarMac was slated to compete in the Class 2A Dike-New Hartford district at Fox Ridge Golf Course on May 13, but the meet was pushed back a day.
In addition to Oelwein, the Bulldogs faced Aplington-Parkersburg, Columbus Catholic, Dike-New Hartford, Hudson and Osage, as well as six individual qualifiers from teams who did not make the district cut.
