The Central girls track and field team participated in a new meet April 15, when they traveled to the New Hampton Girls Invitational. In the great weather, the Warriors put together solid performance that included eight personal records and eight season bests, along with five wins and 12 top fives across 16 events.

“The announcer was very similar to our state meet, where they are talking about the races and the athletes the whole meet, so it was fun for everyone to be able to hear their name and some season info about each athlete,” coach Martha Bauder said.

One of the biggest highlights was Zoey Hyde, who set new personal bests in all four of her wheelchair races, winning the 100, 200, 400 and 800.

Taylor Moser also had a great night, as part of three season bests spread between the 800 sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays and in the 400-meter hurdles. Moser won the latter in 1:13.31, over four seconds ahead of the next competitor. She also took second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.73 seconds, a little over a second out of first place. Teammate Reese Berns finished sixth.

Across other events, the Warriors took fourth in the 4x200 relay with the group of Staci Herman, Alexis Thiese, Lillian Becwar and Savannah Orr, who finished in 2:05.94. Thiese also competed in the 200-meter dash, putting together a personal record run of 31.71 seconds to cross the finish line 10th.

The 1500 featured Coral Rork and Hannah Friedlein, in a respective seventh and 11th. In the 3000, Rork finished fifth while Friedlein was a close sixth.

The Warriors’ 4x110.5-meter relay throwers team took third, while the shuttle hurdle relay of Berns, Madylen Gregerson, Alivia Wiley and Moser finished second in 1:17.44, less than three seconds behind first-place Wapsie Valley. The sprint medley team of Moser, Orr, Tori Sylvester and Thiese crossed the line sixth, and the 4x100 squad of Berns, Sylvester, Gregerson and Herman finished in fifth in 57.92 seconds. Herman also took part in the 100-meter dash, finishing 11th.

Central competed in three field events, including the long jump, where Berns finished fifth with a distance of 12-09.75. Crystal Goodrich and Herman finished just outside the top 10 in the discus, with Goodrich placing 11th and Herman 12th. Marisa Rew took 11th in the shot put and Goodrich was 12th.

The Warriors faced harsher weather conditions and “extremely tough” competition in the second meet of the week, leading to a point total Bauder said was “lower than what we’ve been used to scoring.” Central scored seven team points and finished 13th, while putting together three wins and four top fives in the 16 events they competed in.

Those three wins were by Hyde, who raced in the 100-, 200- and 800-meter wheelchair races. The additional top five was achieved by Moser in the 400-meter hurdles, where she placed fifth in 1:18.16.

The Warriors sent Becwar and Isabella Schmidt out for the 100, where they finished 18th and 20th, respectively. In the 200, Becwar achieved a personal record time of 30.75 seconds to finish 20th. Thiese finished 19th in the 200.

The 100-meter hurdles included Moser in 15th in 18.90 seconds, and Berns placed 16th at 18.93 seconds.

Rork and Friedlein competed in the 800, with Rork placing 15th and Friedlein 19th. Both also ran in the 3000, where Rork was 11th with a personal record time of 13:35.59 and Friedlein was 13th.

Central sent out two teams for the 4x100, with Berns, Sylvester, Orr and Herman finishing 12th and Goodrich, Allison Herr, Layla Embretson and Schmidt taking 19th.

In the sprint medley, the Warriors finished 13th with Orr, Sylvester, Herman and Moser and 16th with Gregerson, Wiley, Becwar and Thiese. Central pulled out a ninth-place effort in the distance medley with Orr, Herman, Wiley and Thiese, then nabbed eighth place in the shuttle hurdle relay with Berns, Gregerson, Wiley and Moser.

Berns earned a ninth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 13-03.50. The discus featured Embretson in eighth with a throw of 83-11, while Herman threw her way into 16th. Embretson finished in 22nd and Herr 23rd in the shot put.

The Warriors’ next action was at Waukon April 23, followed by a trip to MFL MarMac April 25.
