The Wauzeka-Steuben baseball team welcomed De Soto to town on Monday night in the Hornets first game since March 30,
The Hornets came out of the gates fast with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead before De Soto responded in the next inning with two runs of their own to make the score 3-2. Wauzeka added a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. They kept that lead until the top of the fourth inning when the Pirates scored two times to tie the game 4-4.
The Hornets reclaimed the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning. De Soto again tied the game with a run in the sixth inning before pushing two more runs in the seventh inning. The Pirates stranded two Hornet base runners in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the 7-5 victory.
Wauzeka-Steuben was lead offensively by Cooper Lomas (2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI) and Cohen Redman (2-for-4 with a double and one run scored). Also collecting RBIs for the Hornets with one each were Jonah Klema, Theodore Millin and Clint Mitchell.
The Hornets fell to 0-2 with the loss while De Soto improved to 1-2.
Following Tuesday’s home non-conference contest with Brookwood, the Hornets host conference rival and defending the D5 state champion Ithaca Bulldogs on Thursday at 5 p.m.
