Hornets drop season opener to Rib Lake
By Derick Kelly
The Wauzeka-Steuben baseball team faced Rib Lake in a non-conference contest hosted by De Soto on Saturday, March 30.
The Hornets kept Rib Lake off the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. A lead-off single and stolen base by Brett Wagner got the Hornets into scoring position early. A passed ball moved Wagner to third before Ben Bird grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Wagner and give the Hornets a quick 1-0 lead. They took the lead into the top of the second inning.
A potent offense came alive for Rib Lake as they pushed three runs across in both the second and third innings to take a 6-1 lead. Wauzeka cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning with one run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cohen Redman that scored Wagner, who had reached third base thanks to a leadoff walk, a stolen base and an error.
The Hornets would not get any closer for the rest of the game; Rib Lake would score 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to silence the Hornets to give Wauzeka-Steuben a 16-2 defeat in five innings.
Wagner lead the Hornets offense by going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Clint Mitchell added a walk for the Hornets. Bird, Cooper Lomas and Redman each threw for the Hornets with Redman picking up the loss. Rib Lake improved to 2-0 on the season (they also defeated De Soto 9-8 in 9 innings earlier in the day), while the Hornets dropped to 0-1.
Following Tuesday evening’s game at North Crawford, the Hornets will next travel to Cazenovia on Thursday afternoon to face Weston at 5 p.m.
