The MFL MarMac boys basketball team needed overtime to defeat Union Community 64-62 in a Feb. 15 Class 2A second round playoff game.
Union led 25-22 at halftime, when the Bulldogs rattled off 21 points in the third quarter to go up 43-34. The Knights flipped the script in the fourth, however, out-scoring MFL MarMac 25-16 to tie the game at 59 at the end of regulation.
The Bulldogs held a slim two-point margin heading into the final 20 seconds of overtime, but missed four consecutive free throws to leave the door open for the Knights. Union missed one shot with six seconds remaining and another at the buzzer, sealing the MFL MarMac win.
Union out-shot MFL MarMac 39.7 versus 35.5 percent from the floor, and hit two more three-pointers, but the Bulldogs made it to the foul line 20 more times and converted 15 of 31. MFL MarMac also held the rebounding advantage, 46-39, and committed four fewer turnovers.
Carver Blietz-Bentien led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Bryce Diehl totaled 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. Brock Hackett netted three of MFL MarMac’s five shots from behind the arc, and scored 14 points off the bench. Parker Kuehl finished the night with seven points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Now 19-3, MFL MarMac moves on to the district final on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Starmont High School. They face a familiar foe in North Fayette Valley (20-3), whom they split with during the Upper Iowa Conference schedule. The TigerHawks defeated Waukon 59-48 to advance.
The district champion will head to the Substate 3 final at Dike-New Hartford—versus either Hudson or Jesup—on Saturday, Feb. 24.
