A late surge lifted Sumner-Fredericksburg over MFL MarMac 54-36 in a Class 2A regional girls basketball match-up in Monona on Feb. 13.
Offense was hard to come by in the first half, with the teams scoring a combined 16 points in the opening period. The Cougars held a slim 19-17 lead at halftime and were up just 31-29 after the third quarter, but pulled away in the final period. They closed the game on a 23-7 run, after draining multiple shots from behind the arc.
Sumner-Fred hit eight three-pointers in the contest and shot 36.5 percent overall. The Bulldog offense, meanwhile, was largely thwarted inside by Sumner-Fred’s height, which blocked three shots. MFL MarMac shot just 27.9 percent from the floor and connected on five of 19 three-pointers. The Bulldogs also turned the ball over 12 times to the Cougars’ six.
Senior Hannah Bogdonovich led the Bulldogs with 13 points, in addition to five rebounds, two assists and a block. Ava Kishman followed with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Kaitlin Picha netted six points, five assists and a rebound. Emme Wikner chipped in three points and Cora Keehner two.
The Bulldogs finished the season 14-8 overall—all of their wins coming in the Upper Iowa Conference, which they won with a record of 14-2.
