The final regular season game of the year for the Central boys basketball team was a home rematch against the MFL MarMac Bulldogs on Feb. 6.
The Warriors started slowly, finding themselves in a 23-7 deficit as the first quarter came to a close. Over the next two quarters, however, Central put up 31 points, and was only out-scored by seven points over that period. The fourth quarter was a repeat of the first, however, as the Warriors were out-scored 26-5 and lost the game 87-43.
“As you’ll see, we got off to a slow start in the first quarter, and ended poorly in the fourth. However, we were very pleased with our second and third quarter performances, as we were able to be competitive against a top tier conference team,” coach Brady Stramer said.
Central was led by Owen Hammersland, who scored 19 points on 6-16 shooting. He had three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Isaac Loan also scored double digits with 11 points on 5-10 shooting, and added five rebounds and one assists. Jake Hertrampf scored six points and led the team with six rebounds, while Vaughn Zittergruen had a team high-five assists, to go with three rebounds and two points. Jullian Singleton collected four points and four rebounds.
The Warriors shot 35.7 percent from the field and forced eight turnovers on defense, finishing with five steals.
“Overall, when facing conference opponents for the second time around, we were able to improve in seven out of eight of those match-ups, which exhibits the growth and improvement that we emphasize and focus on,” Stramer said.
The Warriors finished the regular season 4-12 in the Upper Iowa Conference and 5-15 overall. They started the postseason at Starmont on Feb. 12, playing the 4-18 Stars.
