Wins over North Fayette Valley and West Central last week kept the MFL MarMac girls basketball team atop the Upper Iowa Conference standings.

NFV raced out to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter of the Jan. 23 game, before the Bulldogs went on a 14-0 second period run to go up 22-15 at halftime. The TigerHawks drew within two points, at 29-27, at the end of the third, and later closed a 10-point Bulldog margin to 37-36, but MFL MarMac held on down the stretch for a 45-43 victory.

Ava Kishman led the Bulldogs with 13 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. She added three rebounds, two steals and the team’s only block. Hannah Bogdonovich racked up 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Kaitlin Picha’s stat line included nine points and four rebounds as well as team highs with five assists and four steals. Autumn Shaw netted five points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

MFL MarMac trounced West Central 66-31 on Jan. 26, after building a 40-12 halftime lead. The Bulldogs shot 37 percent from the field and hit just one three-pointer all night, but got to the free throw line a whopping 42 times, making 31 attempts. The team’s 21 steals also created transition buckets.

Bogdonovich contributed 15 points, four steals and two rebounds, followed by 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists from Picha. Samantha Ruff turned in 10 points, three steals and two rebounds off the bench, and Shaw totaled eight points, seven rebounds and a steal.

With their victory over NFV and a Kee loss to Central last week, MFL MarMac again has sole possession of the Upper Iowa Conference with a record of 12-2. The Bulldogs are 12-6 overall. They hosted Clayton Ridge Jan. 30, and South Winneshiek will head to Monona Feb. 2. The regular season wraps up Feb. 5, at Crestwood.
