Looking to stay in the Ridge and Valley Conference title picture, the Seneca Royals boys basketball team entered their game at Wauzeka-Steuben on Thursday, Jan. 25 needing a conference victory to keep pace with the pack, which included the rival Hornets.

Looking to avenge their December home loss to the Hornets, the Royals came out in focus and took a 34-28 lead into halftime. The Royals used timely shooting to keep the hosts playing catchup for most of the game as the Royals claimed a 71-60 road victory.

Seneca head coach Brian Kwasny liked what he saw from his team in the win over the Hornets, “This was a big win for us as they beat us the first time.” Kwasny also added that “I thought we played really hard and we did good things on both ends of the floor.”

Junior Dawson Davidson paced the Royals scoring with 26 points while also dishing out 6 assists and getting 6 steals. Briar Wall (14 points) and Reggie George (10 points) also reached double figures for Seneca,  while Gage Wall (9 points), Jackson Konichek (7 points), Hunter Hagensick (3 points), and Owen Oppriecht (2 points) rounded out the offensive attack.

The Royals returned home two days later for a matinee contests with the Pecatonica Vikings, who currently sit one game out of first place in the Six Rivers East Conference.

After a relatively low scoring first half ended with the Royals up 33 to 31, the scoring really blew up in the second half as both teams combined to score 92 points in the final 18 minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime tied 78-78. The hosts outscored the guests from Blanchardville 9-6 in the extra period to earn the 87-84 victory. With the non-conference win, the Royals improved their overall record to 7-8 on the season.

Topping the scoring chart for Seneca was B. Wall with 21 points, followed by Davidson with 18, Hagensick with 16, and Konichek with 10 to round out the Royals in double figures. Also contributing to the Royals scoring totals were Oppriecht and G. Wall (8 points each), and Garret Baker and Reggie George (2 points each).

Next up for Seneca is a home game with the Kickapoo Panthers on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:15 p.m.
