The Prairie du Chien wrestling team traveled to Fort Atkinson on Saturday, Jan. 20 looking to repeat as champions of the 17-team Terry Kramer Open. Repeating would not be an easy feat as the field included such strong D1 programs such as Sun Prairie United, Slinger, Waterford, and Pewaukee, as well as area rival Iowa-Grant/Highland.

The tournament was run in a scramble format, meaning wrestling was done in pool play before wrestlers are placed into a championship or consolation round for placement matches. Teams also have the option to enter multiple wrestlers into a weight class although only one team wrestler per weight class actually earn team points during the event.

The Hawks’ Jeremiah Avery posted a big highlight for the Hawks almost right away as he pinned Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Will Whitaker in 1:07 in his first match of the tournament to earn his 100th career victory. Avery is the 21st wrestler in program history to reach the 100 career wins milestone.

The Hawks had five wrestlers reach the championship match of their respective weight brackets - Hunter Reid (106), Drake Ingham (132), Drew Hird (150), Blake Thiry (215), and Jack Simmons (285). Prairie unfortunately ran into some stiff competition in the finals, and Thiry was the only one of the five finalists that was able to pick up a championship when he defeated Jaxon Johnson of Sun Prairie by pin in 1:44. Thiry won the 195 pound bracket last year.

Prairie Wrestling did get top five finishes from Porter Kossman (third at 113), Avery (third at 165), Bryce Lenzendorf (fourth at 157), Mason Hird (fifth at 126), Mason Baumgartner (fifth at 138), and Jackson Perkins (fifth at 144).

Also placing for the Hawks were Jack MacEachern (sixth at 190), Brylee Brewer (seventh at 120), Brady Baumgartner (ninth at 120), Carter Simmons (ninth at 215), and Stanislav Kulchytskyy (15th place at 175). Every Prairie Wrestler entered into the tournament won at least one match during the event. C. Simmons and Kulchytskyy both earned their first career victories during the meet.

The Hawks will travel to Lancaster High School on Saturday, Jan. 27 for the SWC Duals. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
