Monona working on hotel/motel tax details
The Monona City Council, at its Jan. 15 meeting, approved moving forward with writing a new ordinance related to hotel/motel tax. The move is necessary after voters in the November city/school election voted in favor of the city of Monona imposing a 7 percent hotel and motel tax on lodging within the community.
According to city administrator Barb Collins, an ordinance would include the tax imposed, definitions, effective date of tax, collection and restrictions of the use of the revenue.
Additionally, a new ordinance would state, among other things, that 50 percent of the revenue collected would be used for the promotion and encouragement of tourist and convention business in the city of Monona and surrounding areas. The other half would be spent by the city for any lawful purpose for which revenues may be expended.
