The MFL MarMac women’s wrestling team competed in The Marilyn Invitational at East Buchanan on Jan. 19, their final regular season competition before the state qualifying meet later this week.

Sisters Kennedy and Mackenzie Bachman each placed second in their respective weight classes. Kennedy collected a pair of pins en route to the 100-pound championship match, where she was pinned by Postville’s Liliana Cortes. Two falls also got Mackenzie to the first place match at 125 pounds, but she met a tough opponent in Jillian Worthen of Union, LaPorte City, who picked up a 12-3 major decision.

Brooke Donlon had one of her best results of the season at 110 pounds. She opened with a fall in the quarterfinals, before being pinned in the semifinal and consolation semifinal. She rebounded in the fifth-place match, however, with a fall over Tripoli’s Riley Bremner.

Audrey Ruff also turned in a fifth-place performance at 170 pounds. Like Donlon, she won her quarterfinal match, but dropped the semifinal and consolation semifinal bouts by fall and decision. She came out on top her final match, thanks to a pin of Central DeWitt’s Serenity Roberts.

Two Bulldogs—Bayleigh Wood and Danica Friedlein—wrestled their way to sixth place. Despite getting pinned in her first match at 135 pounds, Wood advanced to the consolation semis with two byes, where she was pinned again. Carissa Robinson of Central DeWitt got the best of her in the fifth-place bout. Friedlein had an identical route to the 140-pound fifth-place match, where she lost by fall to Central DeWitt’s Melanie Miller.

After an opening round bye at 125 pounds, Melanie Grimm lost her quarterfinal round by fall, before advancing to consolation round three on a bye. She was pinned again there, and also suffered a late fall in the seventh-place match, to come in eighth.

At 130 pounds, Amelya Weigand had an opening round bye, then lost her quarterfinal and consolation matches by fall, and did not place.

MFL MarMac will next compete in the regional/state qualifying meet on Friday, Jan. 26. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. at Mason City High School.
