The MFL MarMac boys basketball team kicked off the 2024 portion of its schedule with a resounding 88-34 win over Central on Jan. 5.

The Bulldogs knocked down over 57 percent of their shots from the field, including a whopping 10 three-pointers. They out-scored the Warriors 41-11 in the first quarter alone, and held Central to single digits in each of the remaining periods.

Central struggled to hold onto the ball, committing 32 turnovers. Twenty-four of those were thanks to Bulldog steals, which helped the Bulldogs score often in transition.

MFL MarMac also did well in the rebound column, grabbing 31 to Central’s 19, and limited the Warriors to only four offensive rebounds. The Bulldog defense totaled four blocks.

Parker Kuehl shot a phenomenal 10-15 from the field, and made four of seven attempts from behind the arc, for 24 points. He also had three assists and two steals.

Wyatt Powell knocked down five of seven shots, including two of three from long range, to score 14 points. He added two rebounds and five assists and led MFL MarMac with six steals.

Carter Lightfoot sunk four three-pointers for 12 points and had six assists, four steals and a rebound. Eli Hanson contributed 12 points, two rebounds, an assist and a block off the bench.

The victory—MFL MarMac’s fourth straight—improved the team to 5-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference and 7-3 overall.

The Bulldogs will try to keep the winning streak alive this week against Waukon on Jan. 8, then Kee on Jan. 9. The undefeated Hawks are ranked eighth in Class 1A and beat MFL MarMac by just two points earlier this season. MFL MarMac will wrap up the week Jan. 13, against New Hampton in the Upper Iowa Shootout.
