The first week back from winter break was not kind to the MFL MarMac girls basketball team, which lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Decorah shot 54 percent from the field and hit over 40 percent of three-point attempts in a 67-35 win over the Bulldogs on Jan. 2.

The Viking defense also made it tough on MFL MarMac, forcing 19 turnovers, including 17 steals. The Bulldogs struggled offensively, connecting on just 28.9 percent of shots from the field, one of eight three-pointers and eight of 23 free throws.

Emme Wikner led MFL MarMac with 10 points. She grabbed two rebounds and two of the team’s three steals. Ava Kishman netted five points and nine rebounds, while Maddie Keehner added five points and six rebounds off the bench.

MFL MarMac was bested by another hot shooting team Jan. 5, in a 60-52 loss to Central.

The Warriors hit 50 percent from the field, compared to MFL MarMac’s 35.3, led by a 27-point performance by Ashlyn Scherf.

The second quarter was a turning point, as Central out-scored the Bulldogs 21-14 to flip a one-point first quarter deficit into a six-point lead by halftime. It was an advantage the Warriors maintained throughout the second half, handing MFL MarMac its first Upper Iowa Conference loss this season.

Kaitlin Picha put up a team-high 17 points for MFL MarMac—nine of which came from behind the arc. Her stat line also included three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hannah Bogdonovich was equally lethal from long range, and totaled 16 points. She had three rebounds, three assists and two steals as well. Wikner earned eight points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The losses dropped MFL MarMac to 8-5 overall and 8-1 in the Upper Iowa Conference. The Bulldogs will look to get back on track this week with games at Kee on Jan. 9 and against Crestwood at Upper Iowa University on Jan. 13.
