The MFL MarMac boys basketball team defeated Clayton Ridge and South Winneshiek last week, improving to 4-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference and 6-3 overall.

The Bulldogs led the Eagles just 8-2 after the first quarter of the Dec. 19 game, but went on a 19-6 run in the second to open up a 27-8 advantage. They piled on 22 more points in the third quarter, en route to a 56-20 win.

MFL MarMac shot 33.9 percent from the field, despite sinking only three of 24 long-range attempts. The Bulldogs also heavily out-rebounded the Eagles, 43-20, and committed just 10 turnovers to Clayton Ridge’s 19. They grabbed 11 steals and five blocks.

Carver Blietz-Bentien cranked out 19 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Parker Kuehl followed with 15 points, three rebounds, a steal and a block. Landyn Miene totaled eight points and had team highs with 12 rebounds and two blocks, while Carter Lightfoot finished with eight points, eight rebounds, five steals, four assists and a block.

The Dec. 21 match-up at South Winn was much closer, as the Bulldogs came away with 65-54 victory.

MFL MarMac improved its shooting to 39 percent and hit seven three pointers on 16 attempts. The Bulldogs also did well from the free throw line, making 12 of 14. The defense racked up 15 more steals as well as three blocks.

Senior Wyatt Powell and junior Brock Hackett, both of whom hadn’t played yet this season due to injury, returned to the lineup against the Warriors. Powell scored six points and led the team with 10 assists. He also had four rebounds, three steals and a block. Hackett netted three points, a rebound and a steal off the bench.

Blietz-Bentien dropped 18 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Lightfoot matched those 18 points, half of which came from behind the arc. He also tallied four rebounds, three assists and a block. Bryce Diehl had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Now, the Bulldogs won’t return to the court until Jan. 5, when they host Central.
