Last week got off to a solid start for the Central girls wrestling team, which boasted two champions and three runners-up in a tournament at Postville. The Warriors were 8-4 in matches overall and finished second as a team.

One of the champions was Reese Berns, who wrestled at 120 pounds and currently sits at 20-0 for the season. Berns won all four matches via pin and never wrestled past the three-minute mark.

The second champion was Mayleigh Medberry, who finished the tournament undefeated at 130 pounds with five wins, including four pins and an 18-2 technical fall.

Savannah Orr (105) went 2-1 with two pins and Taylor Moser (125) finished 3-1, while Kimberly Suhr (135) won three out of four matches and Maci Keppler won four out of five.

The Warriors’ next meet was at home versus Oelwein and Sumner-Fredericksburg.

Against Oelwein, Berns needed just 43 seconds to pin her opponent and Medberry took a little over a minute for a fall. Keppler also won by pin in a match lasting almost six minutes. Central lost the dual overall, 42-24.

The Warriors went 4-2 in matches against Sumner-Fred, but lost 48-24 due to forfeits. Berns secured a pin in just under four minutes, while Moser, Medberry and Keppler all took about 90 seconds to secure wins by fall.

“There was a lot that went right this week. The girls were wrestling strong and smart, staying in good position and capitalizing on their opponents’ mistakes. The main thing that hurt us this week was we were missing some people from the team. That was the difference between winning the duals on Thursday and getting first at the tournament on Tuesday,” coach Colten Ledbeter said.

The Warriors had one more meet before Christmas break, on Dec. 18, in North Liberty.

“I expect a good successful meet on Monday to go into Christmas break on a high note, and come back refreshed to finish the season,” Ledbeter said.
