Visit the Festival Tree of Lights this weekend
By Shelia Tomkins
The holiday spirit is in the air at the former St. Mary's Convent at 502 S. Second Street in Guttenberg, where visitors will be greeted with a glittering display of decorated Christmas trees.
This first-ever Festival Tree of Lights was organized by Friends of St. Mary's of Guttenberg to raise funds to preserve the convent building. The public is invited to view the trees and leave a bid if they like a favorite tree. Bids will be accepted in $5 increments.
The convent will be open all day during the German Christmas Market on Saturday, Nov. 25. It will also be open on Sunday, Nov. 26. The silent bid auction will close at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Trees of every size and shape are on display, and were decorated and donated by creative volunteers. An elf tree, a pink tree, a silver and blue tree, a tree decorated with kitchen items — along with trees in traditional and classic themes — are just some of the imaginative and festive offerings. Several seasonal Christmas cash-and-carry decorative items are also available.
The trees may also be viewed online and bids placed on the "Friends of St. Mary's of Guttenberg" Facebook page.
In conjunction with the silent tree auction, a soup and sandwich luncheon will be offered at the church following Mass on Sunday, Nov. 26.
