On Nov. 7 Clayton County residents will have an opportunity to vote in municipal and school elections. The Guttenberg Press published interviews with school board and hospital board candidates in previous issues. This week features interviews with the two candidates running for two seats on the city council.

What are your qualifications and background? I am running for my fourth term on the city council. The many aspects of a well-run city take time to completely understand with the ever-changing rules, regulations, and budget constraints.  One person could never know all of it without the leadership of the city office staff (where the money flows in and out of), the Public Works Director (keeping everything working properly), the Police and Fire Chief (providing for community safety) and the Chamber Director (providing for business support and festivities for the community) to name a few.

In your vision for the City of Guttenberg, what changes are needed? My vision is to continue to build a community where people want to live, work and play, all while trying to keep costs down, including taxes and city utility costs.  Balancing budgets every year is very daunting.  Determining where “your” money gets spent for the good of the majority is a yearlong responsibility each year.  I hope to serve again alongside Mayor Schaub and the other devoted city council members.

What are your qualifications and background? I am a sixth generation born and raised resident of Guttenberg. I graduated in 2001 from Guttenberg High School. I'm an eight-year member of the city council. I've been a member of the Guttenberg Fire Department since 2003; was a long-time member of the Guttenberg City Cable Commission; served on the Guttenberg City Park Board; currently serve as Clayton County Firemen's Association secretary/treasurer; Guttenberg Fire Department secretary; vice-president of the Clayton Ridge Dollars for Scholars; secretary/treasurer of the Guttenberg Heritage Society; and financial secretary for our local Knights of Columbus.

In your vision for Guttenberg, what changes are needed? My vision is to promote updating the city’s infrastructure. We need better streets — many streets need repair and updated curb and gutter; continue updating water and sewer lines. I believe good communication between departments and the council is important.
