Rod Boardman and Joan Paulson met for a photo opportunity at high noon on Oct. 11. No, it wasn’t a John Wayne movie; it was to announce the 2023 Oktoberfest Fest Master and Miss Oktoberfest.

Boardman, clad with buttons from previous years’ events on his suspenders, had his hands in various Oktoberfest happenings over the years. “This is my eighth year, and I’ve just been a go-fer for anything.”

Boardman specifically cited the Stein-holding and Hammerschlagen contests, a test of skill and strength to hammer nails with the claw-end of a hammer, as events he’s taken part in.

Paulson said, “We’ve been doing this for 14 years. I’ve been involved with it for the last ten years.” Paulson stated she started as a volunteer, then, in 2013, she joined the committee as the Treasurer. 

Paulson said the Fest Master and Miss Oktoberfest were chosen each year by vote from the Executive Committee.

Oktoberfest will take place on Oct. 21 with a parade in the morning followed by music, contests and, of course, food throughout the day. The event will take place at the Fireman’s shelter on St. Feriole Island, across the street from the ballpark.
