Dean Allen Hallberg, 77, of McGregor, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Harmony in Dubuque. He was born Feb. 9, 1946, to Otto Elmer August and Merriel Jenetta (Johnson) Hallberg in McGregor. He graduated from Mar Mac High School in 1963. Dean served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War.

 

Throughout the years, Dean worked as an over the road truck driver for several companies and owned and operated his own truck. He retired in 1994 due to health issues. He was a member of the VFW in Shell Knob, Mo., and the Swede Ridge Lutheran Church in McGregor. Dean enjoyed going to auctions and playing bingo at the VFW.

 

Surviving Dean are his two children, Jeff (Maren Reed) Hallberg and Courtney (Landon) Shaw, both of McGregor; three grandchildren, Colton Hallberg, Jayden Fiddler and Tinley Shaw, all of McGregor; two siblings, Don (Cherie) Hallberg of Elgin and Elaine Phelps of Oelwein; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Preceding Dean in death were his parents, Otto and Merriel Hallberg, and a sister, Darlene Westemeier.

 

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13, at First Lutheran Cemetery, McGregor.

 

A meal will be provided starting at 11 a.m., before the graveside services, at First Lutheran Church, McGregor.

 

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of McGregor is assisting the family with services.
