Scott K. Gilbert, age 87, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health System in LaCrosse, Wisc. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on July 1, 1935, the son of Lyle and Martena (DeRuyter) Gilbert. He grew up on the family farm in Larrabee, Iowa before going to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa to study agriculture. He then enrolled at Purdue University in Lafayette, IN, where he achieved his doctorate degree in Agronomy. 

After school, he took a job with Pride Seeds that relocated him to southwest Wisconsin where he met the love of his life, Frances. Scott married Frances Kasparek on July 19, 1971. Together, they lived in Iowa and Nebraska before settling in Janesville, Wisc., where they would raise their two children. 

In 2000, Scott and Frances retired to Prairie du Chien where they enjoyed the scenic driftless region together. Scott enjoyed fishing, hunting ginseng, and reading. He also enjoyed a good game of cards and cribbage. He loved all animals especially his cats and the Prairie du Chien K-9 unit. He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii every other year meeting new friends along the way. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Frances; their children Lisa (Dennis Kottke) Mades and Zach (Sandie) Gilbert; his brothers Jerry (Laurette) and Mike (Bette Mandino) Gilbert; his grandchildren Kyle (Tiffany Trowbridge) and Brendan Mades and Reanne Gilbert; and his great-grandchildren Molly, Ronin, Ella, and Aubrey Mades. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m., at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
