John Daniel Kenn, 56, of Waipahu, Hawaii, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas. His death was accidental and happened while working underneath a vehicle. He was born Aug. 2, 1966, in Woodstock, Ill., to Willard and Dorelaine (Manning) Kenn. While he was young, his family moved to Elkader, where John grew up and attended school. Upon graduation from Central Community High School in 1985, he joined the United States Army and became a mechanic. He served his country in both peace and war time. After he was honorably discharged in 1995, he worked as an auto mechanic until his retirement in 2017. During his time in the military, he was married to his first wife, and they had one daughter.

After his discharge and divorce, he and his daughter moved to the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. He loved living there and enjoyed the culture, people and food. There, he met and married his second wife. She had two daughters, and they became a blended family. He was a devout Christian who loved God and his faith. He would often say: “Faith is all we have and all we need.” Some of his major interests included NASCAR, his Irish heritage, riding motorcycles, playing the guitar and violin, drawing, camping, flying, spending time with family and friends and the many dogs he took care of at different times in his life, including Pikko, Paloma, Zorro, Zuzu, Princess, Angel, Chico, Mama Doe and Cookie.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy (Balagia) Kenn, Waipahu, Hawaii; daughter Crystal Kenn, Kaneohe, Hawaii; step-daughter Alexandra (Chris) Thomas, Waxhaw, N.C.; step-daughter Alana (Michael) Downey, Iwakuni, Japan; step-grandchildren Keilah Thomas, Leelah Thomas, Keerah Thomas, Amaya Downey and Michael Downey, Jr.; mother, Dorelaine (Manning) Bushong, Topeka, Kansas; sister, Carolyn (Norman) Brewster, Topeka, Kansas; twin brother, James (Tracey) Kenn, Mount Vernon, Wash.; half-sister Sherle (Michael) Arvidson, Crystal Lake, Ill.; half-sister Mary (Dennis) Mulligan, San Clemente, Calif.; half-brother Richard (Kathleen) Draut, Compton, Calif.; half-brother Don (Eva) Draut, Wolfratshausen, Germany; 14 nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard J. Kenn; stepfather, Stuart Bushong; grandmothers Rosella (Little) Manning and Ellen (Maloney) Kenn; and grandfathers Delbert Manning and Willard P. Kenn.

There was a private viewing in Topeka after which he was cremated, and his ashes returned to Hawaii with his wife.
