Council chooses asphalt for North Fifth Street project

The Guttenberg city council at a special meeting on May 18 decided to go with asphalt for the North Fifth Street project.

At the regular monthly meeting on May 8, the council had decided to accept the bid for concrete though it was higher than the asphalt bid. It was subsequently learned that the  Iowa Department of Transportation would not allow the contract to be awarded as voted on, saying it has to be awarded to the low bidder — which was for asphalt — or go back out for bid, which wouldn't happen until August.

After discussion, the council awarded the contract to the low bidder, Mathew Construction, for $485,538 for asphalt.
