The MFL MarMac baseball team went 1-1 last week, earning a 7-6 extra innings walk-off over Alburnett before losing to conference leading South Winneshiek.
The Bulldogs rode a six-inning shutout from senior Austin Evanson into a 5-0 lead over the visiting Pirates on May 31, but Alburnett tied the game with a five-run seventh. A passed ball in the top of the eighth by MFL MarMac pitcher Parker Kuehl resulted in another Pirate run, but the Bulldogs didn’t back down. With Bryce Radloff on third base and Jacob Schellhorn at second, Ben Krambeer singled up the middle to bring home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.
MFL MarMac had just four hits—singles by Krambeer, Kuehl, Schellhorn and Elias Hatt—but players walked eight times and were hit by two pitches. The team also totaled 10 stolen bases, two each from Kuehl, Schellhorn, Hatt, Radloff and Brayden Gordon. In addition to Krambeer’s two RBIs, Schellhorn drove in two runs, while Kuehl, Hatt and Carver Blietz-Bentien had one RBI apiece.
In the June 1 match-up against undefeated South Winneshiek, it was another bad inning that hurt the Bulldogs. The Warriors led off the top of the second with a double off MFL MarMac starter Schellhorn, then strung together some base hits to go up 4-0. The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, but the Warriors tacked on a run in the third in what was an eventual 5-2 win.
While the Warriors finished the night with double digit hits, MFL MarMac had only three. Radloff earned a one-run single and Schlee accounted for the other RBI. Krambeer singled and scored and Jaxon Millage scored after reaching base on a walk.
The 4-4 Bulldogs had an Upper Iowa Conference doubleheader at North Fayette Valley on June 5, and will head to Edgewood-Colesburg June 7. They will host Turkey Valley, who’s currently sitting second in the UIC, on June 8.
