The Parks and Recreation Department has been hosting the ‘Concerts on the River’ for the last 13 years. “When I started there was music here and there, but they was not anything set up. So I found sponsors and made it happen,” states Mike Ulrich, Prairie du Chien Parks, Recreation & Forestry Director. “The sponsors have been great.”
This years concert series, which can be found on the Chamber website posted on fliers in town, and in many of the local summer events listings, hosts a variety of musicians.
“The music scene is really strong here in Prairie,” notes Ulrich. “The local bands are great to have and I try to mix it up and have people from out of town, as well. It gives it variety.”
Returning favorites such as 16 Strings and a Stick, the Guttenberg German Band, and Nice Guys and the Dirty Mind have performed at the Concerts on the River since it started. “It is great to have these guys come back,” comments Ulrich. “Some of these guys don’t play a lot and I am happy that they are willing to come down to the park.”
There are some newer bands that will make their first appearances on the Concerts on the River stage include Crooked Willow Band, Greg Hall and the Wrecking Ball, and Chelanie and Tisha Mae.
“We get 200-300 people down there for these concerts and without the sponsors, it would not be possible,” states Ulrich. This year’s sponsors include: The PdC Fire Department, Mediacom, Eagles Club, Octoberfest, Edward Jones (Jeff Clausen and Allie Clausen-Thornton), as well as the Parks and Rec. Department.
The concerts run every Thursday night, June 8 through August 10  from 6:30-8pm at Lawler Park Gazebo. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening. “Thursday night is a good night to go out and start the weekend” states Ulrich.
