At special meeting on Thursday, May 11 the Prairie du Chien school board voted four to three to discontinue the 3K program. The public had been informed of the meeting via posting on Tuesday morning.
According to Prairie du Chien School Superintendant Andy Banasik there are two main reasons that the program will not continue: funding and staffing. “The program is not funded by the state of Wisconsin so we get no reimbursement from the state,” Banasik stated in a telephone interview.
For the 2022-23 school there was no 3K program due to lack of staffing. “At the start of the year, we had one or two faculty members who had to leave,” notes Banasik. Even though there was staffing for the coming school year, there was a worry that the district would not be able to retain staff for the program.
In the past six years the 3K program has enrolled: 2016/17=41 students, 2017/18=36 students, 2018/19 =40 students, 2019/20=42 students, 2020/21=25 students*, 2021/22=31 students, and 2022/23=0 students. *COVID numbers
“We know it is a tremendous program and we wish we could still run the 3K program, but it really comes down to dollars and cents and funding,” comments Banasik.
