Advertisements began running this week accepting bids for the Monona Municipal Airport property.

The airport, which the Monona Council approved putting up for sale at its April 17 meeting, consists of 21.687 acres in Giard Township. Interested parties can submit a written offer to buy, as well as a letter of credit, to Monona City Hall until 2 p.m. on Friday, June 2.

The Monona Council will consider offers at its Monday, June 5 regular meeting. All parties who meet the bid requirements will be notified and have an opportunity to raise their respective bids at an auction held at the end of the meeting, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Monona Community Center. Bidding will begin with the highest written bid received.

The city reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive any irregularities in the sale bidding procedure.

The accepted bidder will be required to sign an updated offer to buy at the close of the auction and will be required to make an earnest money payment of 10 percent of the accepted purchase price to prove their commitment. The property is being sold “as is” for cash.

“This is new. [With the exception of Garden View] the city has never sold something this huge before,” said city administrator Barb Collins at the May 1 council meeting. “We’ve had interest, but I have no idea who all might be out there.”

According to Collins, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been notified of the city’s intent to sell the airport property. Before the site closes as an airport, the FAA will complete an inspection and remove any of its property, including flags and cones. In the meantime, the site can still operate as an airport as long as it remains mowed.
