Last week was a continuation of the Central girls track and field team’s early season success. At the Oelwein Huskies Co-Ed Invitational, at less than full strength due to illness and other commitments for some team members, the Warriors still won seven events out of the 17 they competed in and totaled 32 top-10 finishes. The team also ran away with the overall victory, scoring 147 points, which was 29 more than second-place Oelwein.

The Warriors demonstrated team versatility with the wins, taking a top podium spot in distance runs, sprints, hurdles and relays. They nearly swept the field events, winning three out of four.

One of those field event wins came from Brooke Tieden, who set a new personal record in the high jump, clearing 4-10—a full six inches higher than second place. Eva-Rose Van Der Heide finished the event in fifth with a height of 4-00.

Delaney Scherf threw her way to a second victory in the shot put, with a distance of 31-03, over a foot further than second place. Teammates Marissa Rew and Madylen Gregerson finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

The long jump featured four Warriors, all of whom finished inside the top five. Hannah Asche took the win with a jump of 15-05 feet, followed by Lexi Loan in third with a jump of 13-08.75. Savannah Orr was fourth and Eva Embretson fifth.

Layla Embretson was just shy of victory in the discus, with a throw of 76-01 feet. Rew landed sixth with a distance of 63-07.

In the sprints, Asche won the 200 with a season-best time of 27.60 seconds, while Oakley Armstrong powered to the seventh position with a personal record time of 30.92.

Armstrong added another seventh-place finish in the 100, with a final time of 14.95 seconds. Alivia Wiley placed eighth with a personal record of 14.96 seconds, and Orr crossed the line in 10th in 15.33.

The 400-meter dash included Taylor Moser and Alexis Thiese, with Moser getting to the line in fourth place in 1:11.06. Thiese stopped the clock at 1:12.83, putting her in seventh.

The distance runs were equally successful for the Warriors, especially the 800, which Scherf easily won in a time of 2:35.47, more than eight seconds ahead of second place. Layla Embretson finished eighth. The 1500 had Thiese and Aspen Rork running for the Warriors, with Thiese coming in sixth and Rork 12th.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Moser turned in a time of 18.20 seconds, less than a second out of first place, while Loan finished in eighth and Cummer 10th. Moser also competed in the 400-meter event, fining the race second behind teammate Jaydin Dettman, who took home first with a time of 1:15.11.

Central continued to pile on top finishes in the relays, including first in the distance medley and 4x400. The distance medley was comprised of Kuehl, Dettman, Scherf and Asche, who won the race by over 20 seconds in a final time of 4:36.91.

The 4x400 group of Asche, Dettman, Eva Embretson and Scherf ran away with the victory in a time of 4:32.65, over 15 seconds ahead of second place.

It was a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle with the team of Loan, Cummer, Gregerson and Moser finishing in 1:18.38, less than four seconds out of first. Central added a second-place mark in the 4x100, with Kuehl, Wiley, Gregerson and Loan crossing the line in 56.87 seconds.

The 800 sprint medley team of Thiese, Grace Kuehl, Wiley and Gracie Cummer placed third in 2:11.13, and the 4x200 was also third. In that event, Kuehl, Gregerson, Eva Embretson and Armstrong missed the top spot by less than two seconds.

“This meet was combined this year to be co-ed, so it was kind of a marathon event for the kids and parents, but we’re just thankful to get meets in whenever we can,” said coach Martha Bauder. “We competed well and were able to finish on top in the team standings.”

The Warriors followed that success with another strong result at the West Delaware Girls Invite, where they came away with 13 top-10 finishes and one victory over 17 events. Central finished with 49 points, which was good for seventh in the team standings.

The field events were again highlighted by Tieden, who finished fourth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 4-10. Armstrong finished 13th in the long jump and Orr was 16th. In the shot put, Thiese hit a mark of 23-07, which put her 18th, and in the discus, Staci Herman was the highest finisher for the Warriors, with a final throw of 72-00 putting her 15th.

In the sprints, Scherf turned in a sixth-place time of 28 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which was less than two seconds out of first. She followed that up with a personal record time in the 400, winning the race at the wire in 1:03. Reese Berns finished that event 13th.

The Warriors were unfortunately unable to crack the top 10 in the majority of the distance races, including the 800, where Layla Embretson finished 12th. Thiese and Rork were a respective 14th and 17th in the 1500. Layla Embretson made the top 10 in the 3000, finishing seventh.

The hurdles were a little kinder to the Warriors, as Moser snuck into the top 10 with an eighth place finish in the 100-meter event. Dettman was seventh and Moser eighth in the 400 hurdles.

Central put in a third-place finish in the 800-sprint medley, with Kuehl, Tori Sylvester, Asche and Scherf running a 1:57, less than two seconds out of the top spot.

The team took fourth in the 4x100 with the group of Kuehl, Sylvester, Loan and Asche earning a season-best time of 53.86 seconds. Likewise, the 4x400 with Asche, Sylvester, Dettman and Scherf finished fourth with a season-best 4:17.81.

In the 4x200, Kuehl, Sylvester, Dettman and Asche put together a fifth-place run, coming in with a time of 1:52.75. The 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, which featured Loan, Cummer, Gregerson and Moser, was seventh, as was the distance medley. Armstrong, Gregerson, Eva Embretson and Thiese ran that in 5:14.10.

“It was another cool meet weather wise, so not quite as many PRs, but we competed very well against some excellent competition,” Bauder said.

Central was back in action April 25 at Waukon. The Warriors will go to MFL MarMac on April 27.
