Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants!

Final preparations are in place for the Central Drama Department’s production of The SpongeBob Musical Youth Edition. Performances will be Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the Central School Auditorium.

The SpongeBob Musical is the story of friendship, perseverance and acceptance all presented with fun, upbeat music. It includes many of the beloved characters you may remember from the cartoon.

The cast of 22 ninth through 12th graders have been rehearsing since early February to learn the songs, dance numbers and lines. This talented group has worked hard to recreate the characters that are so famously loved by many.

Sam Frailey takes on the main role of SpongeBob while his best friend Patrick is portrayed by drama newcomer Nate Shirbroun. With the help of their third team member Sandy Cheeks, played by Lexi Loan, the three heroes set out to save the town of Bikini Bottom from disaster.

Hoping to stop them are Plankton and his computer wife Karen, played by Olivia White and Ella Buckman, respectively. Rounding out the main characters are Squidward (Eva Embretson), Mr. Krabbs (Tate Berns), his whale daughter Pearl (Brooke Tieden), the Mayor (Gracie Cummer) and Perch Perkins (Keeley Curran).

The ensemble includes Logan Sharpe, Maxwell Schantz, Layla Embretson, Maddie Schmidt, Zoey Hyde, Alexis Thiese, Leah Johnsen-Anthony, Eva-Rosa Van der Heide, Allison Heer, Isabelle White, Brooklyn Amsden and Addison Amsden.

Tech and backstage crews are Quintin Schaffer, Leila Schaffer, Olivia White and IJ Hubbard.

Director Carolyn Yanda has many years of experience directing, but this is her first venture into directing musicals.

“It’s been a fun experience. I’m amazed at the talent this group brings to the stage. Even at our first read through, I thought I was listening to the cartoon. They definitely embody their alter egos,” she said.

Joining Yanda are vocal director Debbie Johnson and assistant director Crystal Stevenson.

“I have really enjoyed working with the students and directors on the musical. This is a new experience for me, as I have never been involved in drama before, and I look forward to the end result,” said Stevenson.

The musical is based on the series by Stephen Hillenburg. The book is by Kyle Jarrow. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau. Original songs are by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At The Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I. and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton and additional music by Tom Kitt. The SpongeBob Musical Youth Edition is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals, www.concordtheatricals.com.
