Bulldogs fall to Jesup in regional duals

The 11th-ranked MFL MarMac boys wrestling team lost to number 22 Jesup 40-31 at the Jan. 31 regional duals at Alburnett, ending the Bulldogs’ bid for a state dual appearance.
MFL MarMac won the dual’s opening match thanks to a fall by 152-pound senior Karter Decker. The J-Hawks put three points on the board with a 10-3 decision win over Quinn McGeough at 160 pounds, but Dayne Kohrs pulled out an 11-7 decision at 170 to make it 9-3. Austin Schaller was pinned in his 182-pound match to even the score 9-9.
The back-and-forth wins continued through the upper weights, as Bulldog Nolan Lerch earned a 9-0 major decision at 195 and Will Howes collected a fall at 285. Taylor Herzmann narrowly lost 4-1 at 220 pounds.
The Bulldogs were clinging to a 19-12 lead as the dual transitioned to the lower weights, but Jesup dominated the next four matches. Wyatt Mohs (106), Keith Anderson (113) and Rylee Kugel (126) were all pinned, and MFL MarMac forfeited at 120.
Holden Mathis and Bryce Radloff secured falls at 132 and 138 pounds, to bring the Bulldogs within five points, 36-31, heading into the final match. Clayton Freese couldn’t hold on at 145, though, losing by 9-1 major decision.
MFL MarMac finished the dual season 22-3. Up next for the Bulldogs is the Class 1A District 6 tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11. MFL MarMac has the unique opportunity to host the event in Monona, starting at 10 a.m. Wrestlers from 10 schools will participate, with the top two finishers in each weight class advancing to state.
