The MFL MarMac girls basketball team battled two Upper Iowa Conference foes last week, rebounding from a close loss to North Fayette Valley with a 34-point rout of West Central.

The Bulldogs trailed NFV throughout the Jan. 24 game, before inching as close as four points at the end of the third period. The TigerHawks held them off, though, sealing a 67-60 win.

MFL MarMac sank eight three-pointers in the game, but it was just one more then NFV, and the team shot roughly five percentage points below the TigerHawks from the field, 38.7 versus 43.5 percent. NFV made two more free throws than the Bulldogs despite making it to the line eight more times.

The teams were fairly even turnovers-wise, with MFL MarMac actually committing one fewer, but the Bulldogs were out-rebounded 42-31. That difference especially hurt the team on the offensive end, where only nine rebounds limited second chance scoring opportunities.

Although she snagged a team-high nine rebounds, the TigerHawks were able to limit MFL MarMac’s leading scorer, Grace Anderson, to just 1-7 shooting for two points.

Fellow senior Ashley Shaw carried the load with 26 points—nine of which came from behind the arc. She also had five rebounds and a team leading four assists. Brooklynn Moon hit two three-pointers for six of her eight points, and collected three assists and a rebound. Hannah Bogdonovich finished the night with seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Caydence Moon contributed a pair of threes, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Bulldogs got back in the win column Jan. 27, in a 60-26 blowout of visiting West Central. The defense picked up 16 steals and three blocks, while holding the Blue Devils to just six points total in the second half.

Offensively, MFL MarMac cooled from behind the arc, with only a few three-pointers, but shot 36.8 percent from the field. Players also got to the free throw line 26 times, making 15 of those attempts.

Anderson was back on top of the stat sheet with 18 points, four steals and two blocks—all team highs. Shaw chipped in 15 points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist. Sister Autumn Shaw provided a 12-point boost off the bench, in addition to nine rebounds, four steals and an assist. Kaitlin Picha was responsible for six points along with a team-high 10 rebounds and six assists. She also had three steals and a block.

MFL MarMac now sits at 11-6 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The Bulldogs will round out the UIC schedule this week, taking on Clayton Ridge Jan. 31, North Fayette Valley Feb. 2 and South Winneshiek Feb. 3.
