The MFL MarMac girls basketball team returned from winter break with a 1-1 week, following up a win over South Winneshiek with a tough loss to Upper Iowa Conference-leading Central.

The Bulldogs led throughout the Jan. 3 match-up with South Winn, shooting an impressive 48.8 percent from the field in the 53-41 victory.

Grace Anderson led all scorers with 27 points on 11-15 shooting. Hannah Bogdonovich also hit double digits with 17, while Kacie Picha chipped in five points off the bench.

Anderson and Autumn Shaw tied for the team lead in rebounds, with six, followed by four apiece from Ashley Shaw and Kaitlin Picha. Ashley Shaw also topped the assists and steals columns, with four and five, respectively, and accounted for MFL MarMac’s lone block.

Other assists leaders were Autumn Shaw with three and Picha and Bogdonovich with two apiece, while Bogdonovich tallied three steals and Anderson two.

Central snapped a three-game Bulldog winning streak with a 63-47 victory in Monona Jan. 6. The Warriors jumped out to a 24-6 first quarter lead before a 19-9 second quarter run allowed MFL MarMac to narrow the deficit to 33-25 at halftime.

Despite out-shooting Central 37.5 to 32.1 percent from the field, the Bulldogs couldn’t edge closer in the second half. The Warriors hit eight three pointers compared to MFL MarMac’s five and made it to the free throw line 13 more times, connecting on an impressive 21 of 23 attempts.

Central also handled the ball more carefully, committing just 13 turnovers to the Bulldogs’ 18. MFL MarMac was only able to snatch four steals while the Warriors grabbed 11. Additionally, second-chance rebounds were hard to come by for the Bulldogs, who had just nine all game.

Anderson totaled 12 points, as did Brooklynn Moon, who returned to the MFL MarMac lineup by draining three shots from behind the arc. Autumn Shaw added eight points, Caydence Moon six and Ashley Shaw five. Kaitlin Picha chipped in two points and led the Bulldogs with five assists.

Bogdonovich pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, followed by Brooklynn Moon with seven. Anderson picked up five.

The Bulldogs are now 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference. This week’s schedule included home games against Decorah on Jan. 9 and Kee on Jan. 10.
