Wins over South Winneshiek and Central improved the MFL MarMac boys basketball team to a perfect 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Upper Iowa Conference last week.

The 83-72 win over South Winn on Jan. 3 was the tightest of the season for the Bulldogs, who watched a 21-point third quarter lead disintegrate in the game’s final minutes.

The Warriors shot a whopping 59 percent from the field, including seven of 10 three-point shots.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were uncharacteristically quiet from behind the arc, sinking only two of 12 attempts, but still hit 49.2 percent of their shots overall.

Zach Driscoll scored 30 points on 10-19 shooting. Three other Bulldogs also reached double digits, with 14 points from Hunter Meyer, 13 by Wyatt Powell and 12 from Parker Kuehl. Driscoll accounted for six of the team’s 13 assists, followed by Powell with three.

MFL MarMac had a slight rebounding edge, 27-24, over South Winn, including limiting the Warriors to just six offensive rebounds. Driscoll and Carver Blietz-Bentien each snagged six and Meyer came up with five.

Additionally, the Bulldogs snatched 18 steals, contributing to South Winn’s 29 turnovers. Driscoll topped that stat line too, with seven, followed by Powell with six and Kuehl four. Driscoll also had the team’s lone block.

MFL MarMac’s margin of victory was more in line with season totals in the 73-38 rout of Central on Jan. 6.

The Bulldogs jumped ahead 21-11 in the first quarter and continued to pile on points throughout the game, shooting 46.7 percent from the field.

Driscoll knocked down three of seven three-point attempts for nine of his 23 points and tied for a team-high five assists.

Blietz-Bentien and Meyer added 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Powell and Kuehl each contributed nine.

MFL MarMac out-rebounded Central 34-21, and similar to the match-up with South Winn, allowed only single digit offensive rebounds, with four. Blietz-Bentien’s nine rebounds left him one short of a double-double. Driscoll picked up seven and Powell five.

Central also struggled to hold on to the ball, committing twice as many turnovers as the Bulldogs, who came away with 18 steals. Powell led this category with five, followed by Driscoll with four and Kuehl three.

MFL MarMac had Decorah next on the docket on Jan. 9, then Kee on Jan. 10. The team will face Janesville in the Winter Classic at Upper Iowa University on Jan. 14.
