The Central girls basketball program notched two more victories last week and, so far, has out-scored opponents by a combined 74 points.

The winning continued when the Warriors went on the road, dismantling South Winneshiek 61-20. The game was close after the first period, with Central holding a small four-point lead, but the Warrior defense clamped down and applied pressure over the next three periods, holding South Winn to 10 points for the remainder of the game.

Central shot 40 percent from the field, but was held to 23.8 percent on three-point shots. Twenty-one offensive rebounds led to second chance opportunities which the Warriors took advantage of, especially leading scorer Delaney Scherf with 22 points. Haley Frieden added nine points and Ashlyn Scherf and Grace Kuehl scored eight points each.

The offense also finished with 16 assists, led by Kuehl with four, followed by A. Scherf and Frieden with three each.

Defensively, Central compiled 20 steals, led by Kuehl with six, while three players had three steals each, including Frieden, A. Scherf and D. Scherf. A. Scherf also had one block.

The second victory of the week versus Springville Orioles didn’t come as easily, as the Warriors found themselves in an early 16-6 hole after the first period. Central showed grit and fought back to close the gap to just four points by halftime and then out-scored the Orioles in the second half, to pull off a 60-55 win.

The Warriors did not shoot as well from the field, at just 34.9 percent, but were aided by 6-15 night on three-point shots. They also went to the free throw line an astonishing 33 times, making 24 of them.

The Warrior offense heavily relied on the big three of D. Scherf, Frieden and A. Scherf, who combined for 47 of the team’s 60 points, while Kuehl dropped nine points.

A. Scherf led the offense with five assists and made her presence known on defense with a team-high four steals. In all, the Warriors had 13 steals and four blocks, with Frieden and D. Scherf getting two blocks apiece.

The Warriors will return to action with a home conference match-up with West Central on Friday, Dec. 9.
