The Central boys basketball team opened its season 1-1, with a loss to South Winneshiek and win against Springville.

South Winn emerged  the victor in the opener by a score of 56-38. Central held an early 13-11 lead after the first period, but then went cold from the floor, out-scored 23-12 over the next two periods.

The Warriors competed well for rebounds, coming away with 29 compared to South Winn’s 32, but gave up 22 steals and turned the ball over 34 times, giving South Winn the opportunity to shoot the ball 23 more times in the game, which ultimately led to defeat.

The Warriors recovered well from the opening game loss when they welcomed Springville later in the week. Central opened up a commanding 41-26 halftime lead, and while the Orioles mounted a comeback in the second half, the Warriors held on for a 76-66 victory.

Central improved in all facets of the game, shooting a whopping 54 percent from the field and impressive 41.7 percent on three-pointers, draining 10 out of 24. The team was also 12 for 17 on free throws.

Four Warriors scored in double digits, including McGreal with a team-high 24 points, followed by Erickson with 15, Sam Frailey 14 and Kelly 10.

The Warriors finished with 34 rebounds, led by Kelly with 12 and Erickson with seven, and the team complied 16 assists, including Kelly with four and Erickson with three.
