PATCH GROVE – With a convincing 62-14 non-conference victory over visiting De Soto last Thursday night, the River Ridge varsity girls basketball team kicked off the 2022-23 season in impressive fashion.

Third-year head coach Veronica Zinkle has her Timberwolves playing well to start the season, with all five starters returning from last year on a squad of just two seniors, two juniors and six sophomores.

Leading the T-Wolves last Thursday night was sophomore guard Melissa Sletten who went 3-of-9 from 3-point range to finish with 18 points. She also led the team with eight steals and six assists, while going 1-of-3 from the free throw line.

Close behind her was fellow sophomore guard Mandi Wehrle, who went 5-of-13 from 3-point range to finish with 15 points, along with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.

Junior forward Shayna Graf chipped in 10 points, seven steals and six rebounds in River Ridge’s win.

The Timberwolves cruised to a 41-6 halftime advantage over the Pirates, then outscored their opponents, 21-8, in a slower-paced second half.

As a team, River Ridge made 26-of-69 (37.7%) total shots from the field, including 10-of-31 (32%) from 3-point range. They were 2-of-7 (28.5%) from the free throw line and came away with 26 total steals.

Following this past Tuesday night’s home game against visiting Fennimore, the Timberwolves will next travel to Darlington on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
