It was a brutally cold fall day when the Central cross country team competed in the Upper Iowa Conference meet at Tri-City Golf Club near Luana on Oct. 13, and some of the runners “weren’t quite ready for the cold air burning in their lungs,” said coach Martha Bauder.

However, clad in hats and long sleeves, the Warriors overcame the weather—which also leveled the playing field—and results showed a team still improving as state approaches.

In the boys varsity race, the Warriors only sent out Gavin Holst, who is a state hopeful. He finished seventh in a time of 18:15 and was a medalist.

The rest of the boys competed in the JV race, which was won by Central’s Collin Jaster in a time of 20:36, a solid six seconds faster than the second place finisher from North Fayette Valley. The Warriors also  had three other top 15 finishers, including Caden Fette in fourth, Vaughn Zittergruen in ninth, and Carter Kruger in 15th. The remaining runners all crossed the finish line inside the top 30, with Bryce Heller 20th, Tate Berns 26th, Michael White 27th and Declan Finley 28th.

The JV team finished second with 48 points, while NFV won with a score of 26.

Central sent out seven runners in the varsity girls race. Hannah Asche, who has battled a hip issue all season, led the team with a second place finish in a course best time of 20:46. Other top runners, Jaydin Dettman and Delaney Scherf, finished 9th and 15th, respectively. All three runners were medalists, and Scherf ran a season best 22:29.

The remaining varsity runners included Haley Frieden in 23rd, Coral Rork in 24th, Eva Embretson in 27th and Reese Berns in 29th. Berns and Rork ran course best times, while the team finished in third place with a score of 69.

The rest of the squad ran in the JV race, where Layla Embretson turned in a course best time of 24:56 and led the team with a sixth place finish. Aspen Rork closely followed in seventh and Madelyn Gregerson was 8th, as both runners achieved course best times. Rounding out the JV team were Alexis Thiese in 12th, Ashlyn Scherf in 13th and Brooke Tieden 17th with a career best 27:30.

The Warriors will travel to Cascade on Thursday, Oct. 20, for the district/state qualifying meet. The event will start at 4 p.m. at Fillmore Golf Course.
