The MFL MarMac volleyball team wrapped up its regular season last week, with Upper Iowa Conference wins over Kee and Central.

The victories improved the Bulldogs’ overall record to 8-18 and conference mark to 3-5, placing them seventh of nine teams. Clayton Ridge finished first with a 7-1 record.

MFL MarMac’s first win of the week came in a 3-0 sweep over Kee on Oct. 11. Set scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-13.

The team racked up 18 kills in the victory, 10 of which came from senior Brooke Gillitzer. Ella Corlett and Hannah Bogdonovich each added three, while Savannah Schaller and Hailee Corlett had one apiece. Makayla Morrissey earned all 18 assists.

Kee had few kill attempts, but the Bulldogs were able to block three. Bogdonovich tallied two of those and Ella Corlett one. From the back row, Kadence Pape secured nine of the team’s 18 digs. Hailee Corlett picked up five and Gillitzer two.

The Bulldogs finished the night with a 90.9 serving percentage, including 11 aces. Hailee Corlett went a perfect 19-19, with five aces, while Gillitzer added five more on just six chances. Pape hit all seven of her serves and had one ace.

MFL MarMac followed up that success with a 3-1 win at Central on Oct. 13. After taking the opening set 25-23, the Bulldogs faltered 25-22 in the second. But they held off the Warriors 27-25 and 25-23 in the final two frames to come out on top.

Central out-played MFL MarMac at the net, 42 kills to 20, but the Bulldogs made the most of their opportunities. Gillitzer again led the team with 10, followed by Bogdonovich with seven and Hailee Corlett with two. All 20 assists went to Makayla Morrissey.

Defensively, MFL MarMac totaled two blocks, both by Bogdonovich. Pape collected a team-high 14 digs and Gillitzer had 10. Hailee Corlett finished with nine digs and Ashley Shaw six.

From the service line, it was Bogdonovich who had a hot night, making all 18 attempts and smashing two of the Bulldogs’ three aces. Hailee Corlett was 11-12 with one ace, while Morrissey was successful on nine of 10 serves. MFL MarMac’s efficiency was 89.7 percent.

The Bulldogs started postseason play on Oct. 17, in a Class 2 - Region 5 first round match-up at Clayton Ridge. The winner will play at Grundy Center on Wednesday, Oct. 19, starting at 7 p.m.
