For over 50 years the Utica Lutheran Church on State Highway 27 (between Fairview and Mt. Sterling) has been hosting a Lutefisk supper. Jerry Anderson, one of the event organizers, states “It is a wonderful  event, with the congregation, and friends of the congregation, coming together to have a great time preparing and serving the supper.”

According to the Olson Fish  Company, in Minneapolis, the Utica Lutefisk order is the second largest order they fill in the United States.  According to Anderson, of the 600 pounds of fish ordered, the congregation hopes “to only have 2 pounds left over. Last year we had 10 pounds and that sold in church the next morning.”

Not only is there Lutefisk, but there will be between 300-400 pounds of meatballs served. “There is a secret recipe for the meatballs. Anyone who wants to learn it, can come and help make them,” quipped Anderson. Friends of the congregation come from around the state and Minnesota to help with the supper. Johnson’s One Stop gives a discount to the church for their services mixing the hamberger and pork. All the vegetables for the dinner were donated by the church’s ladies circle, including over 200 pounds of Rutabagas.

Over the past week dedicated members of the congregation  rolled 2,200 lefse, a soft flat bread made from riced potatoes, butter, and milk. The lefse is cut in half  meaning 4,400 lefse will be served.

There will be a variety of traditional homemade desserts on hand. Krumkake, literally means ‘curved cake’, is a waffle cookie, shaped like a cone and is usually filled with a whipped cream. Serinakaker, a sweet cookie that has a ground almond base. These cookies are pressed into a mold prior to baking to get their unique shape. Rosettes, with their lacy patterns and dusted with powered sugar, are always a favorite.

Along with the supper a  ‘Share Fair’, like an up -scale rummage sale, will take place in the upper level of the church. All the funds raised by the ‘Share Fair’ are used to support local charities, such as the  back to school drive that donates school supplies to  local students in need. The funds raised by the Lutefisk supper are used to support the general operations of Utica church and for donations to the Sugar Creek Bible camp.

The supper will take place on Saturday, October 15, from 11am - 4pm, Utica Lutheran Church on State Highway 27, between Fairview and Mt. Sterling.
