The MFL MarMac football team outlasted Sumner-Fredericksburg 19-6 on Sept. 23, improving to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.

A low-scoring game was what Bulldog head coach Dan Anderson expected.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” he said. “Both teams played great ‘D,’ but we just had a little more offense than they did.”

The Bulldogs struck first, just over one minute into the game, on a 44-yard touchdown courtesy of running back Wyatt Powell. They added another score at the 5:05 mark in the second, this time on a 54-yard burst from fullback Carver Blietz-Bentien. An unsuccessful extra point left the Bulldogs up 13-0.

“We were able to run the ball effectively. It was either 4, 5 yards, or we busted a big one,” Anderson said. “Carver had a nice run and Powell had a couple big runs.”

The Cougars added a touchdown just before halftime that cut the lead to 13-6, but MFL MarMac’s defense locked them down in the second half.

“We started bringing more pressure and making the quarterback throw a bad ball or get a sack,” Anderson explained.

MFL MarMac had 5 sacks in all, 2.5 of which came from Tristen Koehn. He also led the team with a whopping 10 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss. Kade McElwaine tallied 8.5 total tackles, while Powell had 7 along with a sack. Austin Schlee’s stat line featured 5 tackles, a sack and an interception. Elias Hatt snagged a pick as well.

The Bulldogs’ final points came on a Blietz-Bentien 2-yard touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter.

Blietz-Bentien finished with 123 yards on 14 carries in the game, while Powell accounted for 152 yards—also on 14 attempts.

“We pounded it right at [Sumner-Fred], and our guys were able to move the ball. The backs ran hard and the linemen stayed on their blocks and created a seam,” Anderson said. “There were some big runs right up the middle.”

The rushing tandem has proven successful this season. It’s Blietz-Bentien’s first at fullback after serving as quarterback a year ago.

“I think we did the right thing doing that, and it shows. Carver had another big night running the ball up the middle. He runs extremely hard,” Anderson said.

But Anderson is also confident in the growth of MFL MarMac’s passing attack. Sophomore quarterback Zach Driscoll completed 7 of 13 attempts for 70 yards Friday night. He had no interceptions. Karter Decker caught four of those balls for 40 yards, while Blietz-Bentien had a 20-yard catch.

“[Driscoll] is throwing a better ball all the time, and he’s making better decisions,” Anderson said. “They wanted to stop our running game, so we knew we could probably throw the ball a little bit to loosen them up starting the game.”

Putting that offense and defense together spells good things to come for the Bulldogs, according to Anderson.

“We’ve got the right recipe for a winning team, not just this year, but down the road too,” he said.

MFL MarMac will continue district play this Friday, Sept. 30, against Postville. It’s also the homecoming game. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
