The MFL MarMac volleyball team lost its Upper Iowa Conference opener to South Winneshiek last week, but rebounded from the tough match with a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Waukon Tournament that included three wins.

The Bulldogs battled South Winn to extra points in two of the three sets on Sept. 15, but couldn’t come out on top, losing each 26-24. Another set was more lopsided, 25-16, in favor of the Warriors.

South Winn racked up 37 kills on 75 attempts against the Bulldogs, for an average of over 12 per set. The Warriors served with just 80.3 percent efficiency, but smashed nine aces.

No individual statistics were available for the Bulldogs at press time.

At the Sept. 17 Waukon Tournament, MFL MarMac went a combined 3-3. The three wins were the team’s first of the year, improving their overall record to 3-10.

The Bulldogs faced Waukon and North Crawford in the first round, losing to the host team 21-10 and 21-14, but outlasting the Trojans 23-21 and 21-18. MFL MarMac picked up another victory in round two, with 21-10 and 21-14 scores over Kee. However, Spring Grove snapped the streak with convincing 21-7 and 21-16 totals in the next game.

MFL MarMac closed out the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Riceville, by scores of 21-15 and 21-14, before taking down Turkey Valley 21-16 and 21-17. That effort placed the Bulldogs sixth of nine teams.

Upper Iowa Conference play will continue this week, as MFL MarMac heads to Postville on Tuesday, Sept. 20, then welcomes Clayton Ridge on Thursday, Sept. 22.
