Meets at Starmont and Central made for another busy—and successful—week for the MFL MarMac girls and boys cross country teams. The Bulldogs netted multiple top-15 finishes, including another race win for sophomore Jacob Schellhorn.

The Sept. 13 meet at Starmont was the largest the Bulldogs have competed in so far this season, with runners participating from nearly 30 area schools, spanning Classes 1A to 4A.

The best finish came from Schellhorn, who was sixth overall with a time of 17:18. Teammates Will Koether, Tucker Ruff and Sawyer Keehner crossed the line a respective 80th, 86th and 89th—and all with times in the 20:20 to 20:40 range. Logan Ross turned in a 23:58 to place 146th.

MFL MarMac was fifth in the Class 1A team standings, after totaling a score of 96. North Linn led the pack with 53, followed by Hudson at 67, Springville at 76 and Alburnett with 83.

A score of 94 put the Bulldog girls fourth in their Class 1A standings. North Linn and Hudson again took the top two spots, at 43 and 50, and Wapsie Valley was third with a score 53.

Cora Keehner led the MFL MarMac effort. Her time of 22:44 was good for 38th place. Clare Grau followed in 56th, with a 23:36, while Emma Koether and Evelyn Ruff were 85th and 88th, respectively, after finishes of 25:04 and 25:20. Mariah Moser ran the course in 27:03 to place 114th, and Kaylee Nuehring was a close 116th thanks to a time of 27:11.

Two days later, in Elkader, the girls turned in two top-15 placements, as Keehner cruised to eighth and Grau 13th. Keehner’s time was 22:50 and Grau finished in 23:54. Ruff improved her time to 25:12, to place 22nd, followed by Koether in 33rd at 26:21. Times of 27:59 and 28:48 placed Nuehring 44th and Moser 49th, and Cadence Weber finished 64th after crossing the line in 32:03.

The Bulldogs again finished fourth as a team in this race. Their 98 trailed just South Winneshiek at 21, Central at 70 and Charles City at 74.

On the boys side, Schellhorn earned his second victory of the season. His 17:15 was nearly 10 seconds ahead of the time posted by Noah Valenzuela from East Buchanan. Koether was MFL MarMac’s next finisher, running a 22nd place-worthy 20:28. Keehner and Ruff weren’t far behind, coming in a respective 30th and 35th with times of 20:42 and 21:03. Ross’ 60th place effort of 24:33 rounded out the team’s score of 118.

That total put the Bulldogs fifth, this time behind Charles City (31), Clayton Ridge (76), South Winn (86) and Postville (115).

Only one meet is on the schedule for MFL MarMac this week: at Waukon on Sept. 20.
