A second half rally came up short for the MFL MarMac football team in a 28-22 non-district loss at Osage on Sept. 9.

The Bulldogs struggled to keep pace with a Green Devil offense that scored all four of its touchdowns in the air, including two in the first quarter for 80 and 19 yards that opened up a 14-0 advantage.

MFL MarMac running back Wyatt Powell broke into the end zone from nine yards out in the second quarter, and that, coupled with a two-point conversion, cut the deficit to 14-8. But the Green Devils pushed the lead back to 14 points just before halftime, this time on a 25-yard completion, then scored late in the third quarter to establish a 28-8 cushion.

The Bulldogs fought back, as Powell busted through the defense for an 84-yard TD in the third quarter, and added a 35-yard score early in the fourth. Only the first of MFL MarMac’s two-point conversions was successful, bringing the team within six points. Osage halted the late-game surge, however, keeping the total at 28-22.

Powell powered the Bulldog offense, racking up 234 of the team’s 315 rushing yards on 18 carries. He averaged 13 yards per carry and scored all three touchdowns and one two-point conversion.

Fullback Carver Blietz-Bentien handled the ball 14 times, for 40 yards, while wing back Karter Decker rushed for 51 on five carries. Decker was also quarterback Zach Driscoll’s top receiving option, catching four passes for 62 yards.

Driscoll finished the game 7-17 for 76 yards. He threw two interceptions.

MFL MarMac’s defensive standout was junior Kade McElwaine, who totaled 7.5 tackles, 5 of which were solo efforts. Blietz-Bentien ended the night with 5, while Tristen Koehn had 4.5 and Decker 3.5.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-2. They’ll start district play this week, welcoming 1-2 Columbus Catholic on Friday, Sept. 16. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
