The MFL MarMac baseball team bested Postville 13-1 on July 2, to win its Class 2A - Substate 4 first round game.

The Bulldogs scored early and often in the five-inning contest, including a five-run fourth to cap off the victory. It all came with just six hits, but the team also benefitted from seven walks and two hit batters, and reached five times on errors. Eight stolen bases aided the offensive success.

Ben Krambeer had the big hit of the night, a three-run homerun. He also walked once and reached on an error, stole a base and scored three runs. Senior Kaden Stocker doubled twice, swiped a base and scored two runs, while Jacob Schellhorn and Carver Blietz-Bentien both had two-run singles. Leadoff hitter Parker Kuehl tripled, drew two walks and stole a base, in addition to scoring two runs.

Stocker picked up the win for MFL MarMac, allowing just two hits over two innings and striking out six Pirates. The run scored against him was unearned. Krambeer pitched three innings of one-hit ball and added three strikeouts.

The win capped of what had been a tough week for the Bulldogs, who went 1-3 in their final regular season games. A fifth game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The week started with a conference doubleheader sweep at the hands of South Winneshiek. Game one was a 5-1 loss for the Bulldogs, who were tied 1-1 with the Warriors through five innings, only to surrender a four-run sixth.

South Winn tagged Stocker for eight hits and four walks, but only four earned runs. The team also stole six bases.

MFL MarMac collected just four hits and a walk in the loss. Stocker doubled twice and scored the lone run. Kuehl and Schellhorn snagged the other two hits, while Chauncy Drahn walked.

South Winn again relied on late-inning heroics in game two, scoring twice in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie. The Warriors had seven hits and five walks combined against Bulldog pitching, but also reached twice on errors. Only four of their seven runs were considered earned.

Landon Johnson led MFL MarMac with two of the team’s five hits. He also walked once, drove in two runs and scored twice. Stocker singled, drew two walks and scored a run, while Krambeer had an RBI-single. Kuehl scored twice after being hit by pitches.

The Bulldogs were back in action against Waukon on June 29, after the previous night’s game versus Clayton Ridge-Central was cancelled halfway through due to rain. Waukon won the match-up 6-4, thanks to a three-run rally in the sixth inning. MFL MarMac had just taken a 4-3 advantage in the top of the frame.

Schellhorn pitched five innings for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and three walks, while striking out eight batters. Just one of the three runs scored while he was on the mound was earned. However, the loss went to Blietz-Bentien, who gave up three hits, two walks, a hit batter and three earned runs in an inning of work.

MFL MarMac did all its scoring on four hits, two walks and three hit batters. That included a two-RBI double for Stocker, who also scored a run. Schellhorn singled twice and drove in a run, and Blietz-Bentien doubled and scored. Drahn reached base twice on a walk and hit by pitch, then scored once.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 12-11 win over Starmont, after coming back from an early 8-0 deficit.

Evanson picked up the victory after holding the Stars to five hits and three earned runs in the final five innings.

Kuehl led the MFL MarMac offense with two hits and three walks. He also stole a base, knocked in two runs and scored once. Brayden Gordon picked up one of the team’s four doubles and drove in a pair. Additionally, he stole a base and scored twice. Schellhorn collected a two-RBI double, was hit once and scored a run, while Stocker doubled and walked, stole a base and had two RBIs and a run scored.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season at 16-13 overall and 10-7 in the Upper Iowa Conference, which was good for third place behind Kee and South Winn. Those teams were a respective 17-1 and 15-3 in league play.

MFL MarMac continued its postseason run on July 5, in a Class 2A - Substate 4 quarterfinal match-up against Monticello (14-6), in Dyersville. The winner will play either Beckman Catholic or Waukon in the District 8 final on Saturday, July 9, in Dyersville.
